Cañon del Sonche or
Huanca Urco is a 962m deep and 11km long canyon. This natural wonder is located close to
Huancas, which lies within a short distance from the city of
Chachapoyas. The view of the canyon from the lookout is truly spectacular. The short walk up to the lookout is easy and accessible even for people who don't usually hike much.
How to get there
In order to get to the Cañon del Sonche you can take a mini bus from Chachapoyas to
Huancas (5 Soles) and from there walk to the brim of the canyon and the lookout. Alternatively, you can drive your own car or book a tour with a local tour agency. Whatever your means of transportation, you'll get from Chachapoyas to the canyon lookout in about
20-25 minutes.
The Hike
From the small information center (where you'll also pay your entrance fee) you walk up about 500m to the main lookout which is a round stone house. From there you'll enjoy a spectacular view of the whole canyon. Around the round house there are several additional lookouts that are connected through narrow paths that meander along the brim of the canyon.
If you'd like to walk a bit more and go for a real hike, you can hike to the second lookout that is located about 3km north of the main lookout. On days with good view, you can even see
Gocta Falls from this lookout!

The Costs
The entrance fee for the lookout area is
3 Soles per person.
Where to eat
You can buy snacks, water and soda at the main lookout or at the information center. There are also restaurants in Huancas where you'll find typical regional meals.
